The Foreign Affairs Committee has announced a new inquiry into the Overseas Territories. This will focus on such matters as standards of governance, the role of Government-appointed officials, transparency, accountability, the application of international treaties and agreements, human rights, and relations with parliament.
We can already think of countless things to say about Chagos for every one of the above points. We look forward to submitting evidence to this inquiry about how the Chagos islanders have been ‘governed’ (if you can even call it that) over the years.
We hope this inquiry will put a much needed spotlight on the islanders’ ongoing plight.
