Chagossian Summer Fair: 14 August in Crawley
Next Sunday (14th August) from 12 Noon to 8PM at The Hawth in Crawley you can taste some Chagossian culture, at the Chagossian Summer Fair. Families, children and people of all ages, from all backgrounds, are welcome to join in the festivities.
Musicians and artists from Mauritius and the Seychelles will be present, as well as local performers.
Money raised from the event will help fund the good work of the Crawley-based Chagossian Women's Welfare Group, a community group which helps Chagossian women facing difficulties, many recently arrived in the UK.
Tickets are £8 for adults, with discounted £3 tickets for children between 5 and 12 years old. Children under 5 will have free entry.
Founder of the Women's Welfare Group Hengride Permal described the importance of the fair, which takes place every summer. "It helps us share our culture with the English community in Crawley, and other communities. We get to celebrate together and share our native foods."
"With the money we raise each year, we've been able to help organise sports days for the children, events for elderly Chagossians and helped organise funeral receptions."
The fair has been an annual event in Crawley for several years, and you can see highlights from the 2013 on the right.
